IS THIS FOR ME?

This course is designed for 3D artists, character modelers, riggers and animators who want to take sculpting to a professional level. It suits participants with a basic understanding of ZBrush or similar tools.

You will fit if you want to:

  • Move from basic forms to production-quality anatomy and surface detail

  • Expand from generalist skills into creature and character design

  • Strengthen your portfolio with complex digital sculpts

Prerequisites:

  • Basic ZBrush knowledge or similar sculpting experience

  • Optional pre-course booster: 1–2 sessions of 2 hours in the afternoons for those who need a refresh

What You’ll Achieve

By the end of the course you will:

  • Operate ZBrush with confidence across core workflows

  • Sculpt anatomically correct characters and creatures from blockout to polish

  • Apply anatomy to design decisions and silhouette quality

  • Produce a series of complex sculpts suitable for portfolio and reviews

What’s Inside the Course

Over 4 weeks, you’ll follow a proven process
  1. Week 1: ZBrush fluency for production

Goal: Build an intermediate to advanced command of ZBrush so students can focus on artistic decisions in later weeks.

Outcome: A set of practice sculpts that demonstrate confident use of core tools and workflows.

Key topics: Interface and navigation, core brushes and transforms, masking, DynaMesh, SubTools, Polygroups, visibility masking, clipping brushes, ZRemesher, Sculptris Pro, UV Master, extract surface and deformers for armor and cloth, ZModeler, procedural masking and alphas.

Practice: Skull study from reference, plus an open-choice model.

    Review: End-of-week show and tell.

  2. Week 2: Group diorama production

Goal: Apply Week 1 techniques in a collaborative scene with clear composition and narrative.

Outcome: A composed diorama that shows form hierarchy, readable silhouettes, and consistent detail control.

    Brief options:

    1. Two characters, dramatic outdoor arena overgrown by nature

    2. One character, tragic interior stairwell

    3. Architecture and nature, harmonious setup such as a Japanese tower with a cherry tree

    4. Nature with architectural props, dramatic setup such as an ancient battlefield and cliff entrance

  3. Week 3: Anatomical construction by body part

Goal: Learn to construct the human body using anatomical rules by focusing on individual regions.

Outcome: A coherent set of regional anatomy studies that assemble into proportionally correct figure construction.

Focus areas: Head and neck planes and landmarks, torso relationships and rhythm, arm and hand muscle groups and planes, leg and foot structure, gesture to form transition.

Practice: Progressive ecorché studies per region, then integrated proportional studies.

  4. Week 4: Sculpting with 3D reference material

Goal: Improve anatomical accuracy by working from ground-truth 3D scan reference and translating it into clean sculptural forms.

Outcome: A refined full-figure sculpt guided by scans, ready for portfolio presentation.

Focus areas: Building reference boards from scans, measuring proportion and angles, plane breaks, pose and presentation choices, optional 3D print readiness.

Practice: Detailed human body sculpt using 3D scan reference, packaged with turntables and stills for portfolio.
